George Washington and Thomas Jefferson grew hemp.
Bill Clinton claims he smoked but didn’t inhale (Seriously, Bill? C’mon…), while JFK, George W. Bush and Obama definitely inhaled.
And legend has it that Richard Nixon helped Louis Armstrong smuggle a suitcase full of cannabis through U.S. Customs.
Conclusion? Whether they’re inhaling or not, cannabis and our presidents go way back. So we felt it was only fitting to honor our American leaders by doing a President’s Day post.
That…and we’re getting a three-day weekend! And that means you’ll have an extra day to take advantage of everything Sin City has to offer.
Here are the 10 best ways to celebrate President’s Day weekend in Las Vegas!
1. Mariah Carey at the Colosseum
Best-selling female artist of all time. A global music sensation. Multiple Grammy-winning, chart-topping…how many adjectives can we use to describe Mariah Carey?
And on Friday, February 15, and Saturday, February 16, she’s going to be performing at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace.
Can’t see her show on President’s Day weekend? She’ll be performing the following weekend too!
2. Comedian Bill Maher at The Mirage
Bill Maher, in addition to being hilarious, is both an open cannabis user and legalization advocate, so we’d be remiss in more ways than one not to mention the fact that he’ll be performing at the Mirage on Friday, February 15 and Saturday, February 16.
You should definitely smoke a bowl before going to see the show. He’ll probably smoke one before doing his set!
3. Backstreet Boys: Larger Than Life
Remember the Backstreet Boys? If so, there’s no real need for an introduction.
But if you don’t remember them or are too young to even know who they are, they’re a boy band that’s been delivering pop music hits for the last 25 years (Are they really still a “boy” band? Whatever: we’ll go with it).
Their hit songs include “I Want it That Way” and “Shape of My Heart.” But they’re most recently known for their Grammy-nominated single “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart.”
In any case, Backstreet’s back! They have a residency at Planet Hollywood, and they’ll be performing fresh off of their appearance at the 2019 Grammy Awards. Their final performance is on April 27, so you’ve still got some time if you miss the show this weekend.
4. Lady Antebellum: Our Kind of Vegas
While the Backstreet Boys residency is coming to a close, the seven-time Grammy Award-winning country music trio Lady Antebellum is starting their residency at the Palms. And they need you now!
Fun fact: Lady Antebellum is the FIRST country music act to headline at the Palms. So if you can make it to one of their performances, you won’t just be seeing an awesome show. You’ll also be getting a little bit of Vegas history in the making!
5. Vegas Golden Knights vs. Nashville Predators
The Vegas Golden Knights had a Cinderella-like first season, making it all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals last year.
Now they’re determined to make history again this second season, and on Saturday, February 16, they’ll be squaring off against the Nashville Predators at the T-Mobile Arena.
A Vegas hockey game is an experience like none other. Catch this game if you can!
6. Nevada Ballet Theatre
Most people come to Vegas expecting classic Vegas entertainment. But we’ve got classical entertainment too.
So if you’re looking to switch things up a bit, and you happen to dig ballet, make a trip down to the Smith Center to see Firebird, Raymonda Variations, Light Rain, and Crane/ing performed by the Nevada Ballet Theatre. The performance will take on Saturday, February 16 at 7:30 pm and Sunday, February 17 at 2:00 PM.
7. President’s Day 5K, 10K, 13.1K, 26.2K Virtual Run
Ever heard of an organized “virtual race?”
No, it doesn’t mean running in a virtual reality simulation, although that’d be pretty cool. You run the race in real life, on your own, setting your own course, then you submit your time to the host organization.
In this case, the host organizer is Virtual Run Events Powered by Moon Joggers, and it’s their 2019 President’s Day 5K, 10K, 13.1K, 26.2K run.
Part of the $20 registration fee will go to support the organization Save a Child’s Heart.
Once you complete your race and send in your time, you’ll receive a Mt. Rushmore-themed medal in the mail. Easy-peezy.
Obviously, it’s based on the honor system, so we trust that if you’re going to run a full marathon, you’ll abide by the whole George Washington “I shall not tell a lie” honor code and really do it!
8. Virtual Reality at the MGM Grand
Since we teased you with a little bit of virtual reality in the previous event, we’ll tell you about an actual virtual reality event: Virtual Reality at the MGM Grand.
You and your friends will be transported to epic worlds where you can battle zombies and killer robots as well as solve mind-blowing puzzles in strange lands inhabited by flying whales and giant parrots.
If your mind can handle it, this sounds like a perfect cannabis enhancement experience. Just sayin’!
9. Introduction to Red Rock Canyon
On President’s Day itself — Monday, February 18 — Red Rock Canyon will be hosting a visitor introduction tour. Now is one of the best times of the year to visit the park, weather-wise, so if you’re in town, take advantage if it!
