4 Best Ways to Celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. Weekend in Las Vegas
January 21 is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day: the day we celebrate the birthday of the acclaimed civil rights leader who helped transformed the racial, social, and political fabric of our country.
We’ll be enjoying a three-day weekend in honor of King’s birthday. Do you know how you’re going to spend it?
If you’re coming up short on ideas, here are the four best ways to celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. weekend in Las Vegas!
1. Attend the Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade
Any holiday worth its salt has a parade, and MLK day is no exception. The parade will take place in downtown Las Vegas on Monday, January 21 at 10:00 AM.
For more information on the parade, visit www.kingweeklasvegas.com.
2. Enjoy Free Admission to Red Rock Canyon
This year, Red Rock Canyon is waiving their Scenic Drive entrance fees on Monday, January 21 in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
Here some things you need to know about visiting Red Rock Canyon in light of the current government shutdown.
Park staff won’t be on hand to operate the park or the day-use facilities, which means no educational programs or trash and road maintenance.
So if you do plan to visit Red Rock on MLK day or at any point during weekend while the government shutdown is still in effect, just know that the park staff won’t be able to provide any sort of assistance or emergency response if you need it.
In light of all this, we recommend that you travel to Red Rock with at least one another person and not do anything too wild. Just keep it chill and enjoy the beautiful scenery!
For more information on visiting the park during the shutdown, visit https://www.redrockcanyonlv.org/closure-information-december-2018/.
3. Sample MLK’s Favorite Foods
MLK grew up in the South, and consequently, his favorite foods can be found on pretty much any soul food menu. They include:
- Steak
- Fried chicken
- Macaroni and cheese
- Pickled pig’s feet
- Pecan pie
So celebrate both his life and his food by cooking up these dishes (the pickled pig’s feet might be a bit outside your comfort zone, but hey: don’t knock ‘em till you’ve tried ‘em! And if you’re interested, we actually have a great recipe for pecan pie here)!
But if you’re not looking to do any cooking yourself, Vegas has a ton of great soul food restaurants such as M & M Soul Food, Soul Food Cafe, Yardbird Southern Table and Bar, and Gritz Cafe.
