16 Best Ways to Spend Memorial Day Weekend 2019 in Las Vegas
How often do you think about the freedoms you enjoy?
Are there any freedoms that you take for granted?
Like:
The freedom to speak your mind without fear of retribution from the government?
The freedom to practice the religion of your choice, or no religion at all, without fear of persecution?
The freedom to use cannabis without fear of imprisonment?
It’s easy to forget those who sacrificed their lives for the sake of our freedoms.
That’s why we celebrate Memorial Day – so that we remember that all the freedoms that we enjoy came at a cost.
The Origins of Memorial Day
Memorial Day was originally known as Decoration Day, and it originated in the years after the Civil War.
The Civil War ended in 1865 and had claimed more lives than any armed conflict in American history – so many, in fact, that it required the creation of our first national cemeteries.
By the late 1860s, Americans in towns and cities across the country would hold springtime ceremonies to the fallen soldiers, decorating their graves and saying prayers.
In 1868, General John A. Logan, leader of a northern Civil War veterans organization, called for a nationwide day of remembrance on the 30th of May, asking people to place flowers and decorations on the graves of fallen soldiers.
On this first “Decoration Day,” General James Garfield gave a speech at Arlington National Cemetery, and 5,000 people decorated the graves of 20,000 Union and Confederate soldiers.
Although Decoration Day originally began as a way to honor Civil War fallen soldiers, after World War I, it came to encompass all U.S. military members who’ve died in all wars. It was renamed “Memorial Day” and became a federal holiday in 1971.
Are You Going to be in Las Vegas During Memorial Day Weekend?
It’s sobering to meditate on the lives of those who died for the sake of our freedoms.
But Memorial Day is also a time for celebration.
When we take time off from work and our busy schedules in order to enjoy our lives, our freedoms, and one another’s company, that is one of the greatest demonstrations of honor that we can make to the fallen.
Here are the 16 best ways to spend Memorial Day Weekend 2019 in Las Vegas.
Las Vegas Memorial Day Activities for Locals
1. Have a BBQ
Fire up the grill, start working on that potato salad, stock the fridge with your favorite drinks, and invite your friends over.
Memorial Day marks the first unofficial day of summer, which means it’s the perfect time for a BBQ.
2. Organize a Picnic
Memorial Day picnics are as standard as Memorial Day BBQs.
So find the nearest park, pack the cooler, put a blast out on social media where you’re going to be, and enjoy some fun in the sun with your family and friends.
Depending on the layout of the park, you can also bring some game stuff like frisbees, basketballs, or soccer balls.
With any luck, the park will have public grills, which means you could do a BBQ picnic!
3. Pizza & Pool Party
We don’t know yet what the weather on Memorial Day will be like, but we’ve got three guesses: hot, hot, and hot.
If you’ve got a pool, or know someone who does, start planning a pool party. Everyone loves a pool party…except for people who don’t like to swim.
But don’t worry about them too much because you’re also going to have pizza at this pool party. And everyone loves pizza…except for people who don’t like pizza.
And if your friends don’t like pizza, well, hey: nobody’s perfect.
4. Go to a Drive-In Movie
Drive-in movies might seem like a quaint relic of the past, but if you’ve never been to one, it’s a unique experience.
The blockbuster movie season is going into full swing, so now’s the perfect time to visit the West Wind Las Vegas Drive-In for a retro movie-going experience!
