Before the Civil War, West Virginian native Ann Reeves Jarvis started the Mothers’ Day Work Clubs to help teach local women how to care for their children.

Ann Reeves Jarvis also had a daughter: Anna Jarvis.

After her mother’s death, Anna Jarvis came up with the idea of Mother’s Day as a way of honoring the contributions and sacrifices that mothers make on behalf of their children.

Jarvis got financial backing from John Wanamaker, a Philadelphia department store owner. She organized the first Mother’s Day celebration at a West Virginia Methodist church in May 1908.

One of Wanamaker’s retail stores also held a Mother’s Day celebration, and thousands of people attended.

But that wasn’t enough for Jarvis. She wanted to see the holiday added to the national calendar.

She started a massive letting writing campaign to newspapers and influential politicians, asking them to adopt the new holiday.

Finally, she won her cause in 1914. President Woodrow Wilson signed a measure that officially established the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day.
