A cannabis concentrate is a cannabis product that contains a concentrated form of THC. THC is the main active ingredient in cannabis, and it’s responsible for the plant’s psychoactive effects. THC belongs to a class of chemical compounds called cannabinoids. Cannabis manufacturers make concentrates by extracting THC and other cannabinoids from the cannabis flower and transforming it into a consumable product such as an oil. As the name suggests, cannabis concentrates contain far more THC than regular flower. While flower may contain anywhere from 20-30% THC, concentrate products can have between 60%-90% THC.

The Benefits of Concentrates

  • For medical patients who suffer from severe chronic pain, concentrates offer a greater opportunity for pain relief.
  • Whether you’re a medical patient or a recreational customer, regular cannabis use can raises your tolerance level. But with concentrates, high-tolerance users can still enjoy the benefits of THC without needing to smoke large quantities of flower.
  • Concentrates such as vape cartridges are relatively simple to use and don’t require a lot of prep work.
  • Because concentrates are more powerful than regular flower, users don’t need to consume as much product to get the desired effects, which could translate into fewer trips to the dispensary.

6 Different Kinds of Cannabis Concentrates

CO2 Oil

CO2 oil is made by extracting the cannabinoids and terpenes from cannabis using pressure and carbon dioxide. The resulting oil can be vaporized in a number of ways, the most popular being portable vape pens.

Consumers may be attracted to this type of concentrate because the extraction process involves a medical-grade solvent and is non-toxic.

Butane Hash Oil

BHO is an increasingly popular cannabis concentrate that’s used for dabbing.

The cannabinoids are removed from the plant using butane, which results in a wax-like substance, hence the nickname “wax.”

BHO can contain up to 90% THC, which is why it’s an attractive option for medical patients suffering from severe chronic pain.

Kief is the powdery substance that collects at the bottom four-chamber grinders.

More specifically, it is the resin glands of the cannabis plant where a large majority of cannabinoids and terpenes are produced.

You can sprinkle kief on to cannabis flower before smoking it in order to gain a more “enhanced” effect.

Hash is an ancient form of cannabis concentrate. It’s made by collecting large amounts of kief and compressing it to form bricks.

Rick Simpson Oil

Rick Simpson Oil is named after the man, Rick Simpson, who created a homemade cannabis oil concentrate to treat his skin cancer.

The oil is made by soaking cannabis in isopropyl alcohol, which draws out the beneficial compounds. Once the solvent evaporates, the resulting liquid concentrate, which looks a little bit like tar, can be consumed orally or applied to the skin.

Tinctures were the most common form of cannabis medicine in the U.S. before the plant was declared illegal. Tinctures are made through an alcohol-based extraction process, and they are applied orally, usually under the tongue.
