How Can Marijuana Help With Digestive and Irregular Abdominal Pain?

Articles

Abdominal issues can range from uncomfortable to debilitating, yet even some of the mild side effects can even be signs that there is something seriously wrong. Abdominal pain can be a symptom of many serious diseases. Depending on what is found, marijuana can help you deal with these pain issues. Here’s what you need to know how to read the signs of what your body is showing you and how marijuana can help.

What Are Signs To Worry About?

  • Nausea
  • Bloating
  • Too Much Burping
  • Sharp Pains
  • Shortness of breath
  • Dizziness with any of these

Location Is Important!

Sometimes we have to be our own investigators, before seeing the doctor, when it comes to our health. First, know that the abdomen is broken into four quadrants and nine regions, as this image shows:

Why is knowing the region important? Because there are many internal organs in the abdomen like the stomach, small and large intestines, kidneys, liver, appendix, gallbladder, pancreas, colon and reproductive organs only to name a few.

Let’s look at pain in the mid-abdominal region first. That is usually due to digestive irregularity. Belching, burning sensations, and pain in the intestines can be a sign of a serious condition. If they don’t clear up on their own after a day or so, you may need to get examined for conditions like:

  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome
  • Crohn’s Disease
  • Gastroparesis
  • Peptic Ulcers
  • Esophagitis
  • Esophageal Ulcer
  • Duodenal Ulcers

Pain in the upper abdominal region could be simple indigestion, but it could also be issues with the bile duct, pancreas, or your colon. Pain down the left side of your abdomen is likely due to your transverse colon, as that is where a large part of it lies.

Lower abdominal pain can also be a sign of a serious issue. If your lower right abdomen hurts badly, especially if you press in and then let go, go to the emergency room! It’s a sign of appendicitis, a life-threatening condition. Pain that’s toward the rear of your abdomen and heading downward through the low back could mark a sign that there’s a kidney condition like kidney stones.

In short, knowing where in your abdomen you hurt is crucial to finding out which organs to look at for the problem. However, most abdominal issues are simply some sort of inflammation, and that’s something that cannabis can help control.

What causes most digestive issues and how can marijuana help?

When food is chewed up and swallowed, it enters into the esophagus, then to the stomach and right into the top of the small intestine, called the duodenum. This is where most intestinal irritation and inflammation starts. So, how can marijuana control this inflammation?

There are compounds called terpenes that are part of the cannabis plant, mostly in the flowers. Cannabis terpenes are the key ingredients for dealing with abdominal issues. Examples include myrcene, pinene, humulene, and limonene. Each terpene has a significant benefit, but for digestion, D-Limonene is the most effective.

D-Limonene is an oily nutrient that’s also found in oranges and lemon peels but is far easier to take through cannabis consumption. It has benefits including:

  • Helps with oxidation and inflammation
  • Helps improve metabolism
  • Helps improve gut flora and weight gain
  • Helps eliminate cancer cell growth
  • Helps improve immune response

Why does it do all this? D-Limonene mimics a terpene found naturally in the body called NF-kappa 8. This terpene controls a core gene signal that regulates immunity and cellular inflammation in the body. Thus,D-limonene significantly supports your natural defense system.

It also improves gut flora due to its antibacterial and antifungal effects. Digestion issues can make bowels sluggish due to overgrowth of bad gut bacteria and the yeast Candida albicans. This yeast produces toxic metabolites that slow down your colon. D-Limonene can destroy these toxic bacterias and yeasts.

D-Limonene can assist with

  • Indigestion (burning, feeling full)
  • Acid-reflux (burping, burning, pain in stomach)
  • Sluggish Bowels (constipation or irregularity)
  • Reducing cholesterol and high blood pressure
  • Clearing the gallbladder
  • Increasing liver detoxification enzymes
  • Anxiety
  • Sleep
  • Metabolism
  • Reducing Appetite
  • Reducing the chance of breast cancer

If you want to improve your gut health, taking 1000mg of D-Limonene is recommended daily for bowel health. A great way to do that is through cannabis edibles. Your doctor can help you find strains that are high in D-Limonene so you can supplement your diet. They can also recommend other foods that naturally contain this potent and health-giving terpene.

So if you have abdominal pain and it’s in one of the problem areas, don’t wait too long to get it checked out! And if it turns out to be something chronic, considering taking marijuana edibles with high levels of the terpene D-Limonene to smooth your problems out.
